Shopping For an LCD TV - How to Get the Best Buy

For many people who are shopping for an LCD TV, the key issue is price. Other people are looking for the best picture and perhaps sound quality, or a certain set of features (e.g Full HD, HDMI, 1080p, LED display etc).

On the issue of price, the good news is that the traditional big brands - Sony, Samsung, Philips, LG, Panasonic, Sharp etc - are becoming more price competitive. In fact, the big brands are becoming so price competitive, that the so-called cheap LCD TV brands are not necessarily cheaper than the major brands, especially in the current economy, where the big brands are competing hard.

For example in a recent review by Choice of 42 inch / 106 cm LCD and Plasma TVs the cheapest was from Sanyo followed by a Samsung model than Panasonic and Philips.

Some cheap LCD TV brands (which are sometimes also called "no name" or "value" brands) may be available in only one country, or just a few countries, whereas some others are available around the world. LCD TV brands in this category include Vizio, Kenmark, Viewsonic, Kogan, Syntax, TCL, Polaroid, UMC, Olevia, Daewoo, Westinghouse, iLO, Goodmans, TEAC, Norcent and Zenith?

Of these brands Vizio is the most successful by far. Based on US sales figures, Vizio sold 21.6 percent of total LCD TVs shipped in the first quarter of 2009. This is a 50% increase from the 13.8 percent market share Vizio achieved in the fourth quarter of 2008. As such Vizio has now become the top-selling LCD TV brand in the U.S

Anyway the question of interest to most people about cheap LCD TVs is are they any good? The answers to that question revolve around what are the buying criteria that are important to you. A low or at least competitive price is obviously important to most people, but what do you trade off to get a lower price?

If you check out reviews of cheap LCD TVs, you'll see that some people love them, others hate them. Some customers never have a problem with their TVs, but others have failures and then have problems with customer support trying to get their issues resolved.

In the July 2008 issue of Popular Mechanics they compared the Samsung LN40A650 LCD TV against the VU42LF Vizio LCD TV. At the time of the review, the Samsung was more than twice the price of the Vizio at ($2700 vs $1100).The reviewer concluded that although the Vizio looked good by itself, when compared side by side with the Samsung the (large) difference in price was justified.

So here is our LCD TV buying guide and tips:

1. Define your buying criteria - size, features, budget range etc. Write these down in priority order (so you know what you might be willing to give up first if price is an issue).

2. Use LCD TV reviews from the internet and elsewhere to create a shortlist of which LCD TVs meet your buying criteria. (Review sites such as epinions.com are good for this).

3. Go and see the shortlist in a store "in the flesh". Ideally see the LCD TVs on your shortlist side by side or at least within a short period of each other using the same source material. i.e take a favorite DVD with you and spend at least a few minutes watching it on each LCD TV.

4. It won't be unusual to find the TV that you like the best is not in your budget range. If this is the case, find a second best choice that is within your budget.

5. Once you have a shortlist of LCD TVs that you'd be happy to take home, you can now negotiate the best deal. Remember the internet is not necessarily the cheapest.

Also watch out for internet scam artists, because unfortunately, there are plenty of these around. Before you buy from an unknown internet retailer, research who they are and what their track record is like using sites such as resellerratings.com and ripoffreport.com.

I've had the LG 42PQ30 plasma tv for about 2 months now and I'm still learning how to use more of its features.
The other day I upconverted my dvds to 1080p and noticed the TV picked up the signal as 1080/60p. Then i figured wow I got a 1080p television at a 720p plasma tv price. What a nice tv, I was able to display 1920 by 1080 resolution from my pc vga output even though the picture is a little washed out because of vga resolution limitations. I will try to go DVI out to HDMI and see if there's a difference in picture quality. The picture on 480p, 720p, and 1080i were all great. I guess when you have a 42inch television standard definition doesn't get dragged out and blurred like the larger 50 plus inch television. This tv displays everything I threw at it greatly. I looked at my friend's Samsung LN40B650 with 120 hz and noticed my LG 42" plasma displays football games alot better with no blurs. One caveat is that this LG plasma has one of the best hdtv tuners that I've seen. It picks up all the digital channels in my area with no artifacts and i'm only using old rabbit ears antenna that I bought for ten years ago. Nevertheless, this TV is a plasma so lights need to be minimized to eliminate the glare.

The TV is good at the price point I paid - 9+tax (Sears). LG is a respected brand in Asia and a 42" LCD 1080p at that price is a good deal. The picture when viewing true HD signals, just comes to life and is breath-taking. Fairly basic connectivity with 1 composite, 2 AV, 1PC and 3 HDMI ports. Would have been nice to have one more composite and HDMI ports and looks like the newer models have them. The speakers are well hidden and makes for a smooth clean finish on the outside. There are also numerous (more than you ever want) amount of controls to fine-tune the picture. Fairly easy hack available to turn on USB port to view pictures or play movies - great bonus.

That said, the sound quality seems a bit sub-par compared to other TVs in the market. I also noticed some light leakage on the far corners of the TV - other than for Sony or Samsung this seems a problem for all other big TVs. Also, for those of you watching TV with over the air signals, please note that this TV does not pick up the OTA Electronic Program Guide (EPG), which was a big surprise to me, since those dirt cheap TVs you buy at Walmart or during BF sales too have them. Big goof-up at LG design, I should say. Lastly do not expect a Samsung or Sony style processing of low-fidelity signals (SD, ED). Standard-Def signals look rather grainy and poor - I guess the processing chip is where LG cheaped out. Invest in a good quality up-converting player for your DVDs and change the channel if you run-into non-HD programming as a work-around.

Lastly the customer service is no-worser than that of Samsung or Sony. A bunch of air-heads, quite a bit of wait-time and frustrating responses. But do not discount the TV for that - like I said - this is how all TV manufacturers support their TVs (I have a Sony and Samsung), so no big deal. Wish the industry was overall better, thatz all.

Overall, a reasonable purchase if you dont pay too much. I am sure you will learn to like your purchase - if you are considering it, go on pull the trigger.

I bought it through amazon. Really a very good price compared to SONY and Samsung. The Picture quality is great and HD is full and involving.
Also free voltage (100-240v) and rotating screen. Sounds like a trivial function, but a rotating screen is an important function if you would like to view the screen from various points in your house. And you have a hard time fiding a rotating table for this kind of TV. Overall, a very nice product with a very nice price.

Plasma Screen Televisions - Are They Dead?

Why is everyone asking if plasma televisions are dead? The plasma screen television is one of the marvel inventions of this decade, yet more and more people are turning away from them as fast as we adopted them. LCD is the current favorite for the majority of consumers, no doubt due to its lower price. LCD screens are also known for performing better in brightly lit rooms, which is a major reason why they look better on store floors and thus, sell better than plasma in most cases.

So should you consider buying a plasma TV or should you stick with LCD?

Recently two big names in the plasma manufacturing world dropped out of the market: Pioneer and Vizio have both announced that they are no longer making Plasma Televisions, instead choosing to focus on more successful product lines like LCD TV's. This represents both the high and low end of the plasma market which indicates that both ends are feeling the pinch.

In addition to that, the CEO of LG has also hinted that they might be stopping plasma production some time in the near future although this is yet to be confirmed and they are continuing to release plasma TV's in 2009.

So the market is now left wide open for Samsung, LG and Panasonic and they are expected to see solid plasma sales in 2009. There is no reason why you should not buy a TV from these brands - provided you can afford the increased price compared with LCD.

You can now buy entry level plasma TV's for as little as $800, such as the Panasonic TC-X1 720p 42". This will be a good quality TV if Panasonic's PX80 series is anything to go by. Of course, you could get a full HD 1080p LCD screen for a similar price - but will you really notice the difference in picture quality from 720p to 1080p? Most people don't.

Plasma screen television technology is far from dead. LCD is just catching up and I can see both having a very equal market share in time to come as Plasma costs come down and LCD technology improves even more. A Plasma TV will generally outperform an LCD in a side to side comparison so your decision is going to 100% depend upon your budget more than any other factor.

Love my plasma, if your into sporting events you'll want the plasma, it has a sharper pic on motion due to the fact that plasma reacts faster than liquid cystal. You won't get that blur that the LCD leaves between frames. the hidden speakers also enhance the look of this sleek unit. I can't review reliability because I only had it about a month, but I think they have improved the Plasma TV's but you might want to invest in a extended warrantee? I chose not too but might not be a bad investment for at least an additonal year.

I'd have my 42" tv for about 3 months now and was originally nervous when purchased because of issues others have faced. I've had none thus far. Picture quality is excellent. It is a very versatile set equipped with 3 hdmi ports, 2 component ports, and 2 av ports as well as a computer hook up for video and sound too.

I don't own a surround sound system/receiver and find this to be all I need with some alterations to the custom sound settings. Currently I have plugged into it: HD DVR (HDMI), dvd player (component), ps2 (Av), I also switch between plugging my ipod and my vcr into the second av port, plus I also hook up my laptop to watch programming over that too. (MLB.TV works nicely through it I must say). I'm rather impressed with the picture quality for all of these items even if almost all of them are not viewed in true 1080p, especially the PS2 which I have seen distorted on other sets. So what I mean by saying this is - don't worry if the rest of your tech is a bit outmoded, it will still work fine, there is no need to run out and buy everything else (though I highly recommend moving to blue-ray when their price comes down if you get used to watching movies in HD).

Update: year and a half later still going strong.

The Trend iPod Built - The iPod Silhouette

The iPod silhouette is known all over the world. In fact, there doesn't have to be a name on the ad, or even a clear visual of the iPod product, and still the public knows that ad belongs to the always innovative Apple. A marketing strategy that took on a life of its own, now the iPod silhouette is an icon in and of itself - just like the device it was meant to market, the iPod.

When Apple was poised to market the iPod, they needed advertising that would stay in the minds of their customers. They wanted something that represented the coolness of the iPod, something that would change the face of advertising just as readily as the iPod could change the face of the music industry. The iPod was revolutionary, so the advertising had to be revolutionary, too.

The famous commercial for the iPod began with a person dancing, in shadow, against a brilliant colored background. The silhouette boogied to music while holding an iPod and listening to the tunes through the iconic earbuds, which appeared in white on the ads, so they stood out from the dancer and the background. The sight became so common that it soon had its own name: The Silhouette.

The ads were an instant hit, and the iPod campaign become recognizable practically overnight. The silhouette wasn't just popular on television - it was also common to see a silhouette, caught in a moment of wild dancing, on the side of a building or a billboard, iPod in hand. Occasionally an ad would appear with no iPod in sight, but the earbuds were featured - a sign that even the iPod accessories had entered into mainstream culture.

The silhouette ad has changed a little over the years, but it still involves the same classic style of a dancing silhouette against a contrasting background. In some cases, only part of the advertisement was in contrast. In a more recent ad to tout the new aluminum color of some iPod cases, the dancers are seen waving their iPods in the air, and a trail of luminescent light follows the device around the screen.

The silhouette ads were so popular that celebrities clamored to be featured in them. The ads developed their own following, with customers on the lookout for the new ones, and discussions about who might be featured next were common on message boards. The iPod silhouette began showing up in television shows. Soon the iPod silhouette had been represented by both trendsetters and legends, including U2, Mary J. Blige, Paul McCartney, Eminem and Bob Dylan.

The silhouette has made its way into other parts of popular culture as well. It is now a popular technique for wedding pictures, common among scrapbooking enthusiasts, and is often featured on posters and bumper stickers. LG 42LC7D 42-inch 720p LCD HDTV Review

We originally bought a Philips TV at Best Buy, but after we got home and opened it up, found it didn't have the analog connection we needed to hook up the very fine stereo system we had(after the salesman and Best Buy told us it did). Best Buy took it right back and offered us this set in exchange even though it was priced slightly higher. Very easy to install and it had all the connections we needed. However, at first I wasn't too happy with the picture. It seemed a little dark and a bit muddy but after researching on the internet and reading the manual a little more, I found that it can be adjusted and now the picture quality on most stations is great! I have to note that we don't subscribe to cable or satellite or any other programs, just get our local on air channels. We do watch a lot of DVDs and there's no problem with them. The main problem we have now has to do with the station signals which, if not good that day, cause pixels to break up and freeze at times. At first I thought it was the TV and went back to Best Buy where another salesperson showed me how to adjust the antenna and check the signal, so we get the best signal possible now. Overall I would rate this TV pretty well. Have had it about 3 weeks now so we'll see how it stands the test of time. Although, I wonder if we should have sprung for a more expensive TV and one with 1080p, this one so far does what we need and looks great.
