How to Buy a New TV

If you're in the market for a new TV and haven't bought one in the last 10 years, you will find that the landscape has completely changed. CRT TVs that used to be ubiquitous are almost non-existent in stores now and plasma flat screen TVs that used to be expensive luxuries are now available at affordable price points. Most people end up choosing between an LCD flat screen and a plasma flat screen. The differences between the two technologies are not all that great. The first thing you will want to consider is the right size of screen for your living room or family room. Bigger is usually better but also realize the the prices go up with size and that some screens can actually be too large depending on the size of your room and the distance from which you will view it. Keep in mind that the some sizes are more common and therefore more affordable than others. In an LCD screen, 32 to 37 inches is most common and usually most affordable. 42 inches is the standard size for plasma screens and will be the most affordable size in many cases.

If you need a smaller TV, you can also consider buying a computer monitor and using it as a TV. You can find a decent 24 inch LCD computer monitor for about $200 and this can work fine as a TV in many cases. Keep in mind that the viewing range may be a bit smaller and that the monitor won't have a TV tuner built in. You may need a video adapter to connect your devices in some cases.
